Frequently Asked Questions
What shipments are covered by the OpenTrack platform?
OpenTrack currently covers all North American import containers and combines the best and most accurate data fields from the following sources to present the most accurate source of truth — all on one platform:
What information do I need to start tracking?
OpenTrack requires only the Master Bill of Lading, Container Number and Ocean Carrier SCAC to initiate tracking on any North American import container. There is never a need to receive or store any sensitive business information.
What data fields are reported by OpenTrack?
OpenTrack standardizes, enriches and reports the most accurate milestone events, tracking data, ocean carrier, terminal and rail carrier data on all North American import containers. Ask us for a free guide to see an overview of all of the data fields that we report.
How can I integrate the API into my TMS and software applications?
OpenTrack’s lightweight API requires only three data fields to initiate tracking and is easily mapped and integrated into most TMS platforms in just a few days. Using Cargowise? Ask us about our integration and receive a free guide to get up and running in 48 hours.
How frequently will I receive tracking updates?
OpenTrack delivers tracking updates multiple times per day using proprietary software that detects the best and most critical times to deliver new data.
How does your pricing work?
OpenTrack is priced on a per-container usage basis and scales up and down to suit your business needs and seasonality. Billing is available on monthly or annual terms with volume-based discounts for annual commitments. There are no additional fees for API usage, additional users or implementation support.
What is rail visibility?
Rail visibility is real-time tracking and predictive ETAs for containers moving via rail across North America. OpenTrack covers both IPI (Inland Point Intermodal) movements for international import containers moving from port to inland destination, and domestic intermodal movements within the North American rail network.
Which rail carriers does OpenTrack track?
OpenTrack provides complete coverage across all North American rail carriers, including all Class 1 railroads (BNSF, Union Pacific, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Kansas City Southern), plus Class 2 and 3 regional carriers. We track through complex interchange routes where containers move between multiple carriers.
How accurate are OpenTrack's rail ETAs?
OpenTrack delivers ETAs that are 80% more accurate than carrier-provided estimates. Our predictive models combine direct carrier data with historical performance patterns, interchange behavior, and seasonal trends, so you can plan pickups and drayage with confidence rather than guesswork.
What is an interchange and why does it matter for rail visibility?
A rail interchange is where a container transfers from one carrier's network to another, for example, from BNSF to Norfolk Southern. These handoff points are among the most common sources of delays and visibility gaps. OpenTrack tracks through all interchanges, so you never lose sight of a container mid-route.
What is Last Free Day (LFD) and why does it matter?
Last Free Day (LFD) is the final day you can pick up a container from the rail ramp before demurrage charges begin. OpenTrack proactively alerts you to LFD dates and changes, helping you avoid costly fees and keep your drayage scheduling on track.
Can OpenTrack track containers crossing the Canadian or Mexican border?
Yes. OpenTrack's granular rail sighting data automatically captures border crossing events with precise timestamps and locations. This is critical for customs compliance, duty calculations, and coordinating cross-border drayage for shipments entering through Canada or Mexico.
Does OpenTrack cover domestic intermodal rail as well as international import movements?
Yes. In addition to IPI movements, OpenTrack tracks domestic intermodal rail equipment across all North American Class 1, 2, and 3 carriers using only an equipment number. No booking numbers or complex reference codes required.
What information do I need to start tracking a container on rail?
For IPI import containers, you can track using a master bill of lading or master bill of lading + container number.
How does rail visibility fit into the rest of the OpenTrack platform?
Rail visibility is one part of OpenTrack's end-to-end container visibility platform, which also covers ocean, terminal, and drayage. All your movements live in a single dashboard, with unified exception monitoring, automated reporting, and TMS integrations, so you're never switching between systems to get the full picture.
